The couple, who have two daughters, remain on amicable terms. No one else is said to be involved in the break-up. The Surrey-born lexicographer has almost 800,000 followers for her unusual but topical “word of the day” tweets. A friend said: “It’s obviously a very sad situation, but Susie has handled everything stoically. “She has ploughed on professionally with all aspects of her working life and is simply trying to make the most of a heartbreaking scenario.

“Obviously Susie and Paul did all they could to make things work, but decided in the end to part ways.”

Oxford graduate Susie first appeared on the show with first host, the late Richard Whiteley. Since then she has worked with Des Lynan, Jeff Stelling, Des O’Connor, Colin Murray and Nick Hewer. She is now part of an all-female cast with host Anne Robinson and numbers whizz Rachel Riley.

Susie also appears on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown, the post-watershed comedy version of the series hosted by Jimmy Carr.

She has written several books on the English language and appears on the podcast, Something Rhymes With Purple, alongside Gyles Brandreth.
