The world of entertainment is vast and spans many mediums, but some celebrities are able to nimbly move back and forth between these worlds with ease. Stars like Natalie Portman and Morgan Freeman got their start on the stage before making the leap onto the big screen. Others have made a name for themselves in film and then gone on to wow when they made their way to the stage and a live audience.
Loretta Devine is one of those talented actors who can move seamlessly between the different types of acting, and her accolades follow her on the journey back and forth between the screen and the stage. Fans of the Emmy-winning star may be interested to know a little more about her love life.
Loretta Devine has a long entertainment career
It was actually music, and not acting, that had Devine’s eye from an early age. As a child, she performed in the church choir and thought she would give professional singing a go, but things didn’t pan out as planned. As The Famous People reports, she did musical plays in high school but found that there weren’t many scholarship opportunities for music as she looked to college, so she decided to focus on acting instead.
Devine landed in New York where she started participating in stage workshops, and it was there that she ended up in Broadway shows like Dreamgirls. This is the part that really helped her get public attention, and it wasn’t long after that Devine began getting attention for film roles as well.
As her IMDb filmography shows, Devine’s resume goes back a long way with her first credited part in 1981. Since then, Devine has wowed on both the stage and the screen including in the comedy series A Different World and the 1995 film Waiting to Exhale — where she played alongside Angela Bassett.
Devine has over 160 credits to her name, and the parts represent a diverse range of roles that spotlight her versatility.
Loretta Devine has several projects in the work
Born in 1949, Devine is currently 71 years old, but she shows no signs of slowing down. In fact, Devine has several new projects in the works. She’ll appear alongside Timothy Olyphant, Daveed Diggs, and Melissa McCarthy in the upcoming drama The Starling. She’s also on board for the upcoming horror film Urban Legend, which is still in pre-production and linked to the 1998 film of the same name, which also featured Devine.
Television viewers will also recognize Devine from her work on Grey’s Anatomy, where she played Adele Webber — the wife of Richard Webber. Like so many Grey’s Anatomy characters, Adele had an abrupt and upsetting departure when her character was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and then died after surgery. The exit may have been disappointing, but Devine did snag an Emmy for her time on the series. Those who don’t know her from that work may recognize her voice, which she has lent to the character of Hallie the Hippo on Doc McStuffins.
Loretta Devine has been married twice
During her long and busy acting career, Devine has made some time for a personal life as well. She married Lamar Tyler in 1973 — before her career had really taken off. The pair had a son named James, but it seems like they separated sometime in the 1980s. Their divorce was not made official until 2008 — likely as a legal hurdle to Devine’s marriage to long-time partner, financial analyst Glenn Marshall.
As Live Ramp Up reports, the timeline of her relationship with Marshall is a bit hazy. In an interview with Essence back in 2009, Devine said she’d be living with her “ol’ man” for six or seven years and had been engaged for eight.
Asked what she was waiting for, Devine said, “I just ain’t had time to plan no wedding. And everything is working out good. Everybody that was dating and got married since we’ve been together done broke up and ain’t speaking. I’m scared to mess with it because it’s going good.”
It does appear that sometime in the intervening years, the pair did decide to make it official.
