Arguably Britain’s Got Talent’s most memorable and surprising contestant Susan Boyle, is about to celebrate her 60th birthday this Friday (1 April). But the singing sensation admitted she was shocked that she reached the milestone age.

It’s quite a milestone, I’m surprised I’ve reached it!

Susan Boyle

The Scottish songstress rose to worldwide stardom after competing in the third series of BGT in 2009, where her rendition of I Dreamed a Dream captivated the judges, the audience and quite frankly, the nation.

Her life since winning the ITV talent contest has been nothing but a whirlwind, but on her 60th birthday she’ll be spending it quietly as lockdown restrictions are still in place.

“It’s quite a milestone, I’m surprised I’ve reached it!” she laughed in a recent interview.

“When they start sending you things like bus passes you think, ‘Wait a minute.'”

Regardless of the UK’s current circumstances with he on-going Covid crisis, Susan will be spending her big day in a very subdued manner, with a cup of tea and cake at home with a couple of close friends who are part of her bubble.

“It’s like any other birthday — exciting,” she beamed, not letting the global pandemic spoil it for her.

“There’s not a lot I can do because of Covid but I’ll be planning a party when it’s over.”

A self-confessed optimist, Susan admitted she has been sticking to the rules religiously as she suffers with Type 2 diabetes.

Considered high-risk of contracting coronavirus, she revealed she’s been trying to stay indoors as much as possible.

She told The Sun: “I’ve not been able to do too much. But that will change later, I’m always an optimist.

“I have diabetes so I have tried to stay indoors as much as possible.

“Catching Covid would not have been a good outcome.”

She added: “I was warned, so I’ve not taken any chances.”

Noting that it is an “abnormal situation” for everyone, she revealed she gives herself a little pep-talk to keep her going when times get tough.

“We’ve not been asked to battle on the frontlines of a war like our parents or grandparents — we’ve been asked to stay at home for the safety of ourselves and everyone else,” the singer pointed out.

“That’s the wee pep talk I give myself if I’m feeling a little low.”

But as soon as it’s all over she’ll be getting back to what she does best, and despite hitting that 60 mark, well, it’s only number to Susan.

“I’m definitely not retiring, that’s for sure!” she exclaimed, referencing 73-year-old singer and actress Elaine Paige, hailing her as one of her great performing heroes.

“Look at one of my idols Elaine Paige, she’s 73 and still performing,” she shrugged.

“I love what I do and want to keep doing it so long as the public enjoys it.”

She insisted: “I’m going to hang on for dear life to what I do.”
