Sony has finally decided to make a new handheld device but it’s only for PS5 remote play… and perhaps cloud gaming in the future.
A remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 was not the only PlayStation Showcase rumour that turned out to be true on Wednesday night. Weeks earlier there had been talk of a new portable PlayStation device that, rather than being a successor to the PS Vita, was designed only to run PlayStation 5 games via remote play.
The original rumour described that device, then codenamed Q Lite, as a standard DualSense controller cut in half, with a screen added in-between. And that’s exactly what it’s turned out to be, except now it’s codenamed Project Q.
Unlike the various game announcements, Sony offered no additional details, just that the screen is 8 inches and that the device will be released later this year.
It does seem rather limited in use, considering it’s probably quite expensive and the games you play must be installed on your PlayStation 5 to work.
However, it’s likely it will also be used to run streaming games when Sony announces its new cloud-based service. PlayStation boss Jim Ryan hinted at exactly this recently, when he talked about ‘quite aggressive’ streaming plans that would ‘exploit that trend of mobility.’
‘Innovation is our passion, and that applies to not just what games you play, but how you play them,’ said Ryan while introducing Project Q at the PlayStation Showcase.
Also revealed at the PlayStation Showcase are some official wireless earbuds, which were also leaked at the same time as the news about Q Lite.
The information came from the already reliable Tom Henderson, which instantly makes his predictions about a new PlayStation 5 model with a detachable hard drive and 2024 plans for a PS5 Pro even more believable.
