Saint Laurent and Sho Shibuya Present an Ethereal Exhibition at Art Basel

It’s likely that over the past few years you’ve noticed giant blocks of color on the front page of The New York Times. The work of graphic designer, Sho Shibuya, the artwork floats somewhere between Ellsworth Kelly’s collages and Lee Ufan‘s meditative brushstrokes.

The New York-based designer told Vogue that the art was a way to maintain “some kind of sanity in the beginning of the pandemic,” adding that he continues to create them now as a mission to “preserve everyday moments.”

As Art Basel Miami is about to commence, Saint Laurent has commissioned 55 of these Sunrise from a Small Window paintings to view in a new ethereal gallery space on the sands of Miami Beach. The sunrise is the center of the show, both aesthetically and metaphorically. A subtle, but powerful way that Shibuya and Saint Laurent creative director, Anthony Vaccarello sought to capture the transition the world seeks to make in light of the pandemic.

Shibuya’s 55 Sunrises is also a nod to the 55th anniversary of the French luxury label’s Rive Gauche boutique opening in Paris. The exhibition will be on view from sunrise to sunset from November 30 to December 5.
