American Pie star Chris Klein looks unrecognisable 21 years after hit movie

To fans of his most famous role of Oz in American Pie, Chris Klein looked unrecognisable appearing on TV last week.

The now 41 year old was recording an interview for Australia’s Today Extra when fans could hardly identify him from his American Pie days.

There to promote his new Netflix show Sweet Magnolias, many viewers couldn’t help but compare Chris to his role of Oz in the teen movie hit that came out in 1999.

The actor admitted that while nowadays he might be more comfortable playing the dad of the teenagers, he still doesn’t feel his age.

In fact, Chris said he was "gobsmacked" after landing the role of the dad in the new Netflix show.

“I have to tell you guys, I was a bit gobsmacked when we started this whole thing and there I was playing the dad of the teenagers,” he said.

“It sure happens fast!” he added.

In Sweet Magnolias, Chris tackles the role of Bill Townsend, a cheating husband who is also engaged to his pregnant mistress, played by Jamie-Lynn Spears.

Chris was 20 years old when he landed the career defining role of hunky high school lacrosse player Chris 'Oz' Ostreicher.

As well as starring in the first movie, Chris rejoined the case of American Pie for the second film and American Reunion in 2012. But he wasn't in American Wedding.

Last year, the whole cast reunited for an interview on Entertainment Tonight to celebrate the movie’s 20 year anniversary.

Chris was joined by Alyson Hannigan, Jason Biggs, Tara Reid, Sean William Scott, Natasha Lyonne and Eddie Kaye Thomas to reflect on the film's anniversary.

Alyson went on to star in How I Met Your Mother, while Tara Reid remained in the spotlight along with pie loving Jason Biggs, who has starred in a number of TV shows and films.

During the 00s Chris battled his own personal demons and was arrested twice for drink driving, before checking himself into rehab in 2010.

Chris's publicist gave this statement at the time: "He thanks everyone for their support as he takes all the necessary steps to deal with his addiction and asks for privacy while doing so.".

He said at the time that he could feel himself "slipping away" and acting wasn't a priority.

Since then, he married his wife Liana in 2015 and the couple have two children, Isla, two, and Frederick, four.
