For maintaining their impeccably groomed eyebrows, there’s one name that every Hollywood celebrity has in their little black book of beauty secrets – Anastasia Soare. She’s the founder of Anastasia Beverly Hills makeup and brow studios, and the woman behind some of Hollywood’s most famous arches, from Jennifer Lopez to Michelle Obama.
Anastasia's secret? Her trademarked "Golden Ratio" method, a clever brow shaping technique that helps to make these famous faces look perfectly symmetrical, in proportion and just generally pleasing to the eye.
OK! caught up with Anastasia to discuss her A-list clients, and exactly how everyone can create the perfect eyebrow…
You’ve got an impressive list of celebrity clients, such as Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian… How were you introduced to them?
I first worked with Victoria about 10 years ago. When she moved to LA, Naomi Campbell recommended me to her, and we became such good friends. She’s an amazing lady – I love her.
Jennifer Lopez has been my client since 1992 – she first came to me when she was filming the movie Selena, and I’ve been doing her brows ever since.
Kim Kardashian used to come to my salon when she was in high school! Then I started doing her eyebrows again 10-12 years ago, as well as her sisters now too.
Which famous pair of brows would you most like to work on?
The Queen would be my dream. I’m such a big fan of the Queen. She’s the ultimate boss lady and an inspiration for any woman.
Explain your famous ABH “Golden Ratio” method…
The Golden Ratio is found in everything – nature, architecture, art. Mathematically, the ratio is 1.618 to 1, which our eyes recognise as an aesthetically pleasing proportion – I also studied it in art school. Then when I started doing people’s brows I decided to apply this formula to create the perfect eyebrow shape, tailored to each individual’s face.
So how do you create the perfect brows?
Draw some imaginary lines – the brows should begin directly above the middle of the nostril and end in line with the corner of the nostril and the end of the eye. The highest part of the brow should be in line with the tip of the nose and the middle of the iris. If you connect those three marks, you’ll have the perfect shape.
Then for the most natural look, use at least two different products to fill them in. Full eyebrows create a shadow on the skin, so you need to firstly mimic that shadow with a lighter colour, then create hair-like strokes with something that’s the same colour as your hair.
What’s the biggest brow faux pas you see people making?
Going too heavy-handed, especially on the inner part of the eyebrow. This part should be kept lighter, more of an ombre look. And over-tweezing is still a big problem. It’s easy to do though – trust me! I over-tweezed when I was younger and mine are much thinner than I wish they were.
What are your thoughts on brow lamination?
I know it’s currently a popular look but it’s not for everyone. We created a product – Brow Freeze, £24 here – that gives you that feathered look without the commitment.
Should you go for microblading?
I’m not a big fan. Microblading looks good for about a month and then it fades, or you can end up with darker eyebrows than you want. If you’re thinking about it, do your homework – check with other people and see how theirs looks two months later.
Should you change your brow style as you get older?
The older you get the thicker your eyebrows should be, as that gives you a very youthful look. When you are 18, you look good no matter what, even without eyebrows!
