Day Meghan’s life changed forever thanks to £36 dress, rattling car and pizza

Meghan Markle has revealed the day her life changed forever in 2011 when she got the role in Suits – and it involved a £36 dress, rattling car and pizza.

The former actress, 38, has shared intimate details of her ‘terrible’ audition which saw her get distracted and forget her lines.

But despite thinking she’d “blown it”, she managed to impress the TV producer bigwigs and her life hasn’t been the same since.

Her role as Rachel Zane went on to propel her to stardom, as well as mingle in certain circles which led her to Prince Harry , who she is now married to and lives in Windsor with their son, Archie.

However, Meghan’s big break took years of hard graft, going from audition to audition, facing setbacks and rejection – some, she says, because she ‘wasn’t black enough or white enough’.

Recalling the day she went for the part in Suits, which at the time was called A Legal Mind, Meghan said she immediately called her agent afterwards and said:  “I blew it.”

She added: “I kept forgetting my lines, I was distracted.”

Disappointed, she went home and “ate her feelings” tucking into pizza and quesadilla as she mulled over what went wrong.

“I wasn’t in a place to be able to let it go,” the now Duchess of Sussex admitted.

“I wanted it, and I lost my shot at it. Or so I thought.”

But to Meghan’s surprise she had ticked the producers’ boxes and was invited to do a ‘test’.

This time it involved auditioning in front of not just the producers, but for the studio and network executives.

She recalled: “Those suits were about to decide my fate for what would end up being known the world over as Suits.”

A last minute note about her appearance beforehand meant a mad dash to buy a dress.

She was told they wanted her to wear something “more conservative” and maybe have her hair pulled back.

So on her way to the audition, Meghan made do with a $45 (£36) black dress she spotted in a shop.

“There was no Tom Ford pencil skirt,” she said.

“Nor a pair of Louboutins on my feet, a Prada blouse was many moons away on Rodeo Drive, and I’d had my hair blown out at DryBar because it was close to my house and what I could afford.”

Meghan – after parking up her “rattling car” – then made her way up endless floors in a lift heading to meet the people who would decide her future.

She was nervous and hungry and found herself face to face with a “regal looking actress” in the waiting room, who smiled at her before she went into the audition.

It wasn’t long before Meghan received the news she had been dreaming of – she had got the part in the American legal drama, alongside the likes of Patrick J Adams and Gabriel Macht.

“I had no idea that this late August morning of 2011 would change my life,” she said.

"Suits stole my heart. It’s the Goldilocks of my acting career – where finally I was just right.”

It marked the start of a new chapter in her life and she moved into a little Manhattan apartment as they shot the pilot, with Meghan starring as Rachel Zane, a beautiful and confident paralegal.

It would be one lunchtime, as she tucked into a lentil salad with muhammara – a hot pepper dip – she got the phonecall to say the show had been commissioned and filming would be in Canada.

Meghan added: “I didn’t know that the regal looking woman was Gina Torres, who would end up feeding me picadillo and white burgundy in her home.
