The Little Mermaid is one of Meghan Markle’s favourite Disney films, and now it’s been suggested that the live action remake contains a dig at her estranged sister-in-law.

A critic who saw an early screening of the film noted the apparent jibe against Kate, the Princess of Wales, in the script for the movie – which Meghan previously said had parallels with her time in the royal family.

Speaking to Page Six the reviewer pointed to the scene where Ariel and Prince Eric meet, after she’s given up her voice to get to the surface and he has to try to guess her name because she can’t speak.

‘His first guess is Diana. His second guess is Catherine, but after [Ariel gives a disgusted] reaction, he [concludes] ”OK, definitely not Catherine.”

They continued: ‘Disney would be disingenuous to imply those name choices were coincidental.’

Diana is of course the name of Prince Harry’s late mother, who died in August 1997 following a car accident in Paris.

While Catherine is the full name of his sister-in-law, the Princess of Wales who is more commonly known as Kate.

Meghan previously admitted she drew a comparison between the Little Mermaid and her own struggles as a working royal after marrying Prince Harry, during her 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey.

She recalled watching the classic 1989 animation during her troubled time in the UK after her 2018 wedding.

Speaking to Page Six the reviewer admitted that one scene between fictional character Ariel and Prince Eric (pictured) seemed to get pretty literal

‘I was sitting in Nottingham cottage and The Little Mermaid came on,’ Meghan said.

‘And who as an adult really watches The Little Mermaid but it came on and I was like, “Well I’m here all the time I might as well watch this”.

‘And I went, ”Oh my God, she falls in love with the prince and because of that she loses her voice”.’

‘But in the end she gets her voice back,’ she added.

Oprah said: ‘And this is what happened here. You feel like you got your voice back’, to which Meghan replied: ‘Yeah.’

Meghan later told Oprah that her and Harry’s love story has been ‘greater than any fairytale you’ve ever read.’

The Duchess has also collaborated with Disney in the past – notably on her first project after leaving the royal family.

Meghan agreed to do the voiceover for Elephant, a Disney+ documentary which followed an elephant family’s 1,000 mile journey across Africa, after a direct request from filmmakers Mark and Vanessa Berlowitz.
