New app slashes your phone bill when you spend at Argos, Boots and TGI Fridays

SHOPPERS can slash their mobile phone bills by shopping at retailers like Argos, Boots and TGI Fridays using a new app.

Airtime Rewards is a new cashback app that monitors your spending and allows you to redeem the rewards as money off your phone bill.

The app is free to download but you'll need link up the Visa or Mastercard bank card that you use for most of your spending.

This is so that it can automatically track where you're spending money, so you don't need to shop through the app.

It will then add cashback to your account for any purchase made at retailers that have signed up to the service.

You can earn between one and 10 per cent cashback, depending on the current offer from specific retailers.

You'll also need to link up your mobile number so that the app can let your network provider know when you want to claim the cashback on your phone bill.

Shoppers can also chose the amount that they're earned that they'd like to go towards their phone bill, so for example, if you've got £10 sitting in your account you can opt to use only £5 towards your bill.

If you're a pay-as-you-go customer, you can convert the cashback into credit to avoid missing out on the rewards.

There isn't a limit to how much you earn either, so if you regularly shop at the partnered retailers then you may be able to dramatically cut down the cost of your phone bill.

There are hundreds of retailers that offer the cashback through the site, and the app will let you know any nearby shops that offer cashback.

It means you can get cashback when using your card to sped at Waitrose, Topshop, Halford and PizzaExpress too.

Jordan Cox from MoneySavingExpert pointed out that savvy users can maximise the rewards by using the card linked up to Airtime Rewards to shop online through cashback sites like Quidco and TopCashback.

Sounds too good to be true, right? We've had a look as there are a few catches.

Only mobile users who are with Three, Vodafone, O2, EE or giffgaff are eligable for the rewards, so no luck if you're with Virgin Mobile or any other piggyback provider.

It can also take up to 35 days for the cashback to be credited to your account.

This is to give the app time to take into account of any returns – meaning the points will be deducted from your account – so it may be over a month before you can reap the benefits on your mobile phone bill.

Depending on the network provider, there may be a minimum amount earned in rewards such as £5 or £10 before you can apply it to your bill.

You can only attach one card so you won't earn any cashback on purchase made on a different bank card.

Of course, it's only worth it if you already shop at the cashback retailers – otherwise your splashing cash on things you don't need and will end up out of pocket.

It's not the only app that can cut down your spending – VA finds cheap supermarket deals in your area and promises to save you £1,040 a year.

Apps like Receipt Hog and Shopprize lets you snap your receipts and upload them to collect points that can be redeemed on Amazon or via PayPal.

Yellow-sticker shopping can also save you a fortune. One dad-of-two bought £139 worth of food for £8 by shopping for reduced goods.
