New tool shows help you can get including Universal Credit and child benefit | The Sun

BRITS struggling with the cost of living can now find out what benefits they're entitled to – and it only takes a few minutes.

The government has introduced a new benefits checker tool which helps people find the financial support they need like Universal Credit.

Since the cost of living soared this winter, costs of bills are now rising to an eye-watering £2,800.

The new benefit checker tool is free to use on the website and you only have to answer a few questions.

The information you'll need to have ready includes how much income you and your family earn, if any, and if there are any disabilities within your household.

You'll also be asked how old your children are and whether you're caring for someone with a disability or health condition.

In order to get support, you'll need to actually make a claim – the benefits checker only advises what help you might be eligible for.

And do note the process of making a claim is different for each benefit, so make sure you have a read about which one you are eligible for.

Support you can claim using the benefit checker tool include:

  • Pension credit
  • Housing benefit
  • Council tax reduction
  • Child benefit
  • Universal Credit
  • Budgeting loan

It's important you do a thorough check on your eligibility – It's thought that around half a million families are missing out on just under £1billion in child benefit.

The biggest benefit going unclaimed is council tax support, with nearly three million missing out on £2.7billion between them.

But do note that eligibility is not guaranteed.

At the moment, you won't be able to claim free school meals, travel costs or extra help for housing costs, but these are to be included in the next update.

You can use this tool to check what you're eligible for and where to go if you're not.

The government has said it's also worth using other benefit checker tools to understand what support you might get.

There are several free online benefit calculators that will break down your payments and what you’re entitled to. These include:

  • Turn2Us
  • entitledto
  • Policy in Practice

Do check around before claiming one type of support – the government says on its website that not all support which might be available to you is listed on the checker.
