The Surprising Reason Why Princess Diana Might Not Have Approved of Harry and Meghan's Royal Exit

PrinceHarry and Meghan Markle dropped a major announcement on the royal family inearly January — they were leaving. Since then, the royals have been dealingwith the fallout, including what will happen to the family’s royal roles nowthat they’ve lost two working members.

Though Harry and Meghan wanted to do this for their happiness, Harry’s mother, Princess Diana, might not have approved of such a change. And there’s a good reason why.

Harry and Meghan have officially left the royal family

The Sussexes started off the new year in a big way: They announced that they would step back from their role as senior royals. The two initially hoped to still work on behalf of the queen, but since they want to become financially independent, they realized it wasn’t feasible to do both. With that, Harry and Meghan have officially stepped down from their royal duties entirely.

The two still want to live a life of helping others, but they will do so without their “HRH” titles. The couple will keep their titles of Duke and Duchess of Sussex and likely still attend major royal events, such as Trooping the Colour.

Princess Diana, Harry’s mother, dealt with the negative press quite a bit during her life

Harry was barely a teenager when his mother died in a tragic car accident in 1997. But Princess Diana knew better than anyone how relentless the press could be; many people suggest the media played a role in her death. When Diana married Charles, she was in the news daily for one reason or another. But when she and Charles announced their divorce, things definitely did not get any easier for the princess.

Massive changes to the family often yield even more negative press

As was the case with Diana and Charles’ split, whenever a massive change takes place within the family, the media covers it even more. Diana wanted to leave Charles because she wanted to escape everything negative that had come with royalty. But in fact, her departure had the opposite effect. Diana instead became the press’ main focus. So much so that, when her fatal car crash occurred in Paris more than 20 years ago, her car was reportedly trying to outrun the paparazzi.

If Diana were still here, she might be seriously concerned about what Harry and Meghan’s departure might actually do to their quality of life.

It’s unclear if Meghan and Harry will be happy in their new life

Harry and Meghan are starting something new in North America, but the paparazzi have already found them. Meghan was recently photographed walking her dogs with Archie in Vancouver, British Columbia, and things likely won’t slow down with the press just because the two have moved. With all the drama surrounding their exit, the press might only get worse.

“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” – The Duke and Duchess of Sussex For more information, please visit (link in bio) Image © PA

If Diana were still here, she might have cautioned the two to take a second look at their royal lives and the intense security royalty has provided for them. Now that they’ll (eventually) be without it, it could turn out to have been a dangerous move.
