Kate Garraway warns ‘still not enough is known’ about impacts of long Covid

Good Morning Britain presenter Kate Garraway warned viewers that there is still "not enough" known about the reality of the impacts from contracting long Covid.

The 53-year-old mum-of-two opened up about the latest developments in hers and husband Derek Draper’s heartbreaking battle over the last 12 months.

Speaking to host Susanna Reid, 50, on GMB Thursday about her new documentary Finding Derek, which airs on TV next Tuesday, she warned: "Obviously Derek is an extreme example, we don't want to scare people with what he has been through.

"But there are many other people who have got versions of it, and still not enough is known about the impact of long Covid.

"We tend to think of long-term breathing problems, fatigue, anxiety, post-traumatic stress syndrome – but it is much more widespread than that," Kate said seriously.

Admitting talking about the subject and her fears about Derek’s future is "very emotional", Kate also shared her shock at realising it had already been a year since the pandemic swept the world.

Kate revealed that she’d been filming for the new documentary since way back in August, but the heartbreaking truth is that she started the project hoping by the end viewers would get to see her and Derek reunited.

"We were rather hoping Derek and I would be chatting with you together, we were hoping that more recovery would be possible, but that has not been the case," she said sadly.

"It is looking not just at what happened to my family, but also to other families and the very long tale that Covid has."

Kate went on to say that everyone is living with the pandemic in "our own way", and it has affected some people worse than Derek because they’ve lost their lives, but she’s lucky her husband is still here fighting.

Derek contracted COVID-19 in March 2020, but while Kate and the rest of the family were hopeful he’d be one of the lucky ones, he suffered a number of intense complications and was in an induced coma in intensive care for months.

Still in hospital now, the star’s husband is continuing to suffer from effects of having the virus over a long period of time – which Kate is worried she and the doctors still don’t have enough information about.

While the virus is no longer present in the 53-year-old’s body, Derek now suffers with kidney failure, damage to his live and pancreas, heart failure, and holes in his lungs from bacterial pneumonia.

He has also had to fight several infections with a weakened immune system, and is still barely able to communicate.
