In today’s episode, couple Sue and Andy were chasing their dream of a fresh start in Cyprus, looking for a place to settle into retirement. But the first property Danni showed them on the Channel 4 property location show did not go down well with the couple, especially Sue, who said it was exactly what she didn’t want.

A Place in the Sun follows house hunters searching for their dream properties abroad. Some are after a holiday home, others a retirement retreat or a fresh start, and the hosts help them see what they can afford in their new country.

Today’s episode saw Sue and Andy looking for the perfect place in Larnaca, Cyprus, with a budget of £150,000.

The couple were after the perfect place for Sue to practice yoga and for Andy to write. He added that the right location could “change his life.”

The town has its own international airport with direct flights to the UK and is steeped in history, but current prices are expected to keep on rising.

The first location was in Goldfish Beach. Introducing the pair to the property, Danni said: “So, here we are at the first property. What’s your first thoughts?”

Sue awkwardly replied: “Hmm… there’s a shower outside,” to which Danni said: “Quite handy for when you come in off the beach.”

Andy added: “To be honest, it’s not as appealing from the outside as it might be from the inside.”

Sue, pointing towards the property’s windows, said: “Already I’m thinking when I look out the windows, what am I going to see because there’s a beautiful view that way and a beautiful view that way but what have we got to look at this way and that way?”

Danni, trying to salvage the couples’ enthusiasm, said: “I wanted to show you what you can get within budget, where you’ve got the beach right on the doorstep.

“So what we’re looking at has two bedrooms, it’s got one bathroom upstairs it’s got a loo downstairs as well, you’ve got a nice little bit of outside space at the back there.

“It’s on the market at £138,000 – it’s been on the market for about six months, so there might be a bit of room for negotiation there.”

Andy said: “Yeah, I think location wise, you probably couldn’t get better. From my point of view, we’re looking for somewhere we’re going to end up retiring in – this looks more like a holiday place than a retirement place.”

Danni suggested going inside, but this only made things worse.

Stepping into the first room, Sue said: “Okay…” before Andy commented: “Very pretty.”

“Is it?” Sue replied. “I feel closed in already. There’s nowhere nice to look out at and that’s exactly what I don’t want.

“I have that in England – I don’t want it here.”

Danni seemed to realise the home wasn’t right for the couple, adding: “That’s okay, it’s got to be right like you said.”

“What a shame,” Sue commented.

Fortunately, Danni was able to show them around a few more properties, some of which Sue and Andy seemed to like.

After seeing five properties, they ended up making an offer on a hillside home that they loved the look of, with panoramic views and a private pool.

They hoped to get the property for £137,000 but ended up securing it for just under £138,500 – as long as the sofa was thrown in, which was eventually agreed.

A Place in the Sun airs weekdays at 4pm on Channel 4.
