Captain Sandy Yawn from Below Deck Mediterranean usually has an earpiece in each ear when she docks the superyacht. One device allows her to hear the vital docking information from her crew. In the other earpiece, she’s tuned into Shaggy. Wait, Shaggy?
Like a surgeon who listens to Mozart during an operation, Yawn turns to music as a way to keep her focused. She explained to a packed crowd during a previous “I Believe Tour” how music inspires her. Yawn said music allows her to maintain intense focus, which has helped her sustain a record of never damaging a boat.
So what does this inspirational captain listen to and what’s on her playlist? She dished with Showbiz Cheat Sheet about music that motivates her. Plus she shared what she thought of Andy Cohen’s playlist during Pride.
‘DJ Andy Cohen’ brought the energy
Yawn’s appearance was highly anticipated on Bravo’s Pride float during the New York City Pride parade in June. Yawn spoke about her experience and said Cohen made all the right music moves on the float too. “It was the music I grew up with and loved,” Yawn remarked. “I love how he mixed it too. He just had all the right songs from the era of Stonewall.”
She also notes how the music kept the energy level high and the crowd engaged. “He just did an amazing job,” she continues. Cohen kept the spirited music pumping for the entire three hours of the parade, Yawn added. “Andy’s Ulitmate Bravo Pride Playlist (Peace Bisquit Mixtape)” included jams like Girls Just Want To Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper.
But there was another thing Cohen did that a great DJ understands too. “He did shout outs for every person on his float,” she said. “He’d say, ‘Let’s give it up for….!” He named every Bravolebrity on his float, which was such a great thing. I think Andy is very generous. Andy is so gracious at allowing people to have the spotlight. And he really shined it on the people on the float, which I really admire.”
Captain Sandy also turns to music for inspiration at work
Yawn has one or two “go-to” songs she taps into when it comes time to dock the boat. Her current favorite jam is “Hope” by Shaggy (featuring Prince Mydas). Yawn says “Hope” is her tune for the year. “I love the lyrics and especially the one, ‘in this life you could lead if you only believe,’” she remarked.
When she addressed the audience at a previous “I Believe Tour” she discussed how music is a huge part of her life, especially while she’s at work. “I change the message in my head by changing the station on the radio,” she said.
She recounted a time during filming in Italy where she was frustrated. But instead of lashing out at the crew, she listened to “F**k Up” by CeeLo Green, which got her in the right mindset while she got ready. “So when I walked out I thought, ‘I’m gonna do this.’ And sometimes it’s OK to lose your temper.”
What’s on Captain Sandy’s playlist?
Showbiz Cheat Sheet asked Yawn to list some of her favorite jams. She graciously shared her playlist and highlighted some favorite, “must have” songs. “So my playlist is a mix because I like all types of music,” she said. From 1970s rock and disco to country, Yawn’s playlist is a cornucopia of musical exploration.
She’s so curious about music she wants to know what her clients are listening to as well. As a result, she has a mix that could rival any DJ. “I have country, Southern rock,” she says. “I love AC/DC, I have to admit it. And I have a crazy mix where you have AC/DC and Lynyrd Skynyrd. But then I have Aretha Franklin and disco.” Her travels through Europe introduced her to Sundowners too.

If she were to assemble a short playlist she’d definitely include “Driver’s Seat” by Sniff n the Tears, “Thunder” by Imagine Dragons, and “Hotel California” by the Eagles. She adds then she has “Take a Letter Maria” by R. B. Greaves. Yawn also loves the song “I Am Here” by Pink.
