Abi (played by Sally Carman) was excitedly preparing for her wedding to Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) when she heard the terrible news her son Seb (Harry Visinoni) had been hospitalised alongside girlfriend Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) after being savagely attacked by Corey’s nasty group. Upcoming episodes of Coronation Street will see how the devastated mother copes in the aftermath of Seb’s death. Sally spoke to Express.co.uk and other publications about how Abi’s grief might lead her down the wrong paths in future episodes as she struggles to accept what has happened.
Friday’s episode saw Abi receiving the news that Seb had died. The mother broke down, falling to the floor in bits before the episode ended.
Actress Sally said eventually Abi will see Nina as a fellow “lost soul,” but initially she will tear into her as being to blame for her son’s attack.
The couple were targeted because of Nina’s gothic appearance and, not knowing what else to do, Abi takes out her emotions on a distraught Nina.
“She 100 percent blames Nina,” Sally said. “At one point she does, she’s just got all this grief and anger and shock and confusion and heartbreak and she needs somewhere to channel it.”
The actress added: “She initially thinks that if she finds out who’s done it that will help it kind of doesn’t.
“And then she wants to know why it happened. Obviously there’s no real answer to that but she needs something to hang onto.
“And she’s told that it’s because of the way Nina looks, that it was a hate crime due to what Nina was wearing.
“Then Abi, in her way that she does, she can be impulsive, just decides to blame Nina, thinking if she didn’t dress that way, Seb would still be alive. So Nina really gets it in the neck.”
Abi is open about the fact that she used to struggle with addiction to drugs, but hasn’t touched them for a long time as she focused on rebuilding her life with Kevin and Seb.
But now that she is set to face a huge trauma, it is possible that she might just turn back to drugs as a way of coping with her grief.
Talking about this potential reaction, Sally said: “It seems unlikely that that’s going to happen just because there’s times in upcoming episodes where she mentions it.
“Sally [Metcalfe, played by Sally Dynevor] and Kevin are particularly concerned about whether she’ll go back to drugs and she just says ‘Look, it’s something I’m constantly thinking about but it’s not what Seb would want, so no, I’m not going to do that.’ And I absolutely believe she won’t.”
On Abi’s determination to get to the bottom of what happened to her son, Sally revealed: “She’s not going to rest.”
She added: “Being the emotional creature that she is, there’s not a lot of maturity going on there either.
“It’s not good. There’s a few days where she tries to take matters into her own hands. Luckily she’s talked down, but she’s just reeling.
“She’s reeling and trying to hold onto something in the only way she knows how. Her heart has been ripped open and there’s a lot of guilt there as well.
“Because she wasn’t there for a lot of Seb’s childhood and when she was, she wasn’t present so there’s so much she’s having to deal with.
“So yes, she’s reeling and Corey very nearly comes a cropper a couple of times!”
Will Nina be able to face being blamed for her boyfriend’s death on top of her own grief?
Coronation Street continues on Monday at 7.30pm on ITV.
