'Dexter': Michael C. Hall Says He Was Approached With 3 Reboot Ideas Before Agreeing to the Upcoming Revival

When Showtime’s hit drama Dexter ended in 2013, many people wondered if there would be a reboot. Actor Michael C. Hall, who played the titular character, previously admitted he was hesitant to return to the show, explaining he would only agree to it if the plot was worth it. He was reportedly approached with three different reboot ideas over the years before agreeing to the forthcoming Dexter revival.

‘Dexter’ is finally being rebooted

More than seven years after it ended, Showtime announced in October 2020 that it had ordered a 10-episode limited series revival.

The program aims to atone for the widely panned series finale, which ended with Dexter faking his death and assuming a new identity in Oregon, instead of being killed or arrested as many viewers expected. But to be clear, it’s not a redo.

Showrunner Clyde Phillips previously said on The Hollywood Reporter’s TV’s Top 5 podcast that the revival will reflect the time passage between the last episode and the present day. “This will have no resemblance to how the original finale was and it’s a great opportunity to write a second finale for a show,” he added.

It took a lot for Michael C. Hall to agree to the ‘Dexter’ revival

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight in an interview published on Jan. 14, Hall opened up about the revival series and how it came to be. He confessed he actually had several offers for a reboot in earlier years but none “felt right” to him.

“I’ve been approached, unofficially, many times in the streets by people who have ideas. But… I think there have been probably, before this, three legitimate ideas or concepts of what we might do and none of them felt right,” he said.

“This one, a lot of it has to do with time passed,” he continued. “This is going to happen in real time, as if as much time has passed since the finale happened.”

“And yeah, we kind of just got the creative band back together again. Clyde Phillips is back, who was the showrunner for the first four seasons, running the show. And Marcos Siega, who is one of the directors. He’s like, ‘We’re gonna shoot it like a long, 10-hour movie.’ It was a combination of the scripts and the timing.”

Hall also said that it just felt right to go back to the show. “I always thought maybe the time will reveal itself when it’s the right time to do it and it did. And I’m excited,” he added. “I was just visiting the sets the other day and it’s real. It’s really happening.”

What’s the plot of the ‘Dexter’ revival?

Hall wouldn’t get into the details of the plot. But the cast additions and related information seemingly confirm Dexter has returned to his murderous ways and is on the verge of being caught.

The Dexter revival will begin filming in 2021 and will hopefully premiere later that year. Until then, check out more of our Dexter coverage here.
