EastEnders confirms when Sam Mitchell will return

EastEnders has confirmed that Sam Mitchell (Kim Medcalf) will remain in Spain for ‘most of the summer’, meaning that she’ll be off our screens for quite a while yet.

The popular character, as viewers know, left the Square in early April after a year-long stint in the show, which saw actress Kim Medcalf reprise the role for the first time in 17 years.

Determined to support her son Ricky (Frankie Day), who is set to become a dad when Lily Slater (Lillia Turner) gives birth, Sam decided to take a job managing a hotel in Spain.

Ricky took the news bad as he’d enjoyed spending time with his mum and getting to know her properly over the past year, but he subsequently said a heartfelt goodbye, giving her a hug, as Sam got a taxi for the airport.

Fans were devastated over her sudden departure, with Sam having become a firm viewer-favourite, but there was reason to be cheerful as the exit is not a permanent one.

Metro.co.uk understood at the time that Sam would be back in the Square later in the year, though an exact date for her return has yet to be revealed.

EastEnders shed some light on the matter during Monday’s (May 8) episode of the BBC One soap, as Denise Fox (Diane Parish) informed Kim (Tameka Empson) that she’d received a call from Sam.

‘She’s staying in Spain’, she said, adding that Sam claimed the hotel ‘desperately’ need her.

An irreplaceable queen. We wouldn’t expect anything less.

Denise concluded that Sam would be away for ‘most of the summer’, before revealing that Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) is writing up an ad to rent out 5D, which is where Sam resided during her latest stint.

Alfie Moon (Shane Richie) overheard, with the news of the flat having piqued his interest, with upcoming scenes seeing the former Queen Vic landlord decide to move out of No 31 and into 5D instead.

EastEnders airs Mondays to Thursdays at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
