EastEnders had to be taken off air earlier this year as the BBC One soap had run out of pre-recorded episodes. So fans haven’t been able to enjoy their usual weekly dosage of EastEnders for the past few months but thankfully, the soap has now returned to our screens. But lockdown has put a lot of pressure on many of the Walford residents – Chantelle Atkins (played by Jessica Plummer) more than most.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from EastEnders.

When Chantelle and Gray Atkins (Toby Alexander-Smith) first arrived on the square, everyone believed them to be a glamorous and very loved-up couple.

But it wasn’t too long before the dark reality was revealed with Gray secretly being a controlling and abusive husband.

On a day to day basis, Gray tries to micro-manage everything Chantelle does.

And when things don’t go his way, he beats his wife up.

So when the country went into lockdown, this would have been Chantelle’s worst nightmare.

With everyone having to spend more time indoors than ever before, Chantelle has not been able to escape Gray.

Now able to return to some form of normality, Gray was seen putting a tracker on Chantelle’s phone to keep an eye on her whereabouts.

But his wife has had enough and has started seeking legal advice about getting a divorce.

Unfortunately, though, Chantelle isn’t going to get the happy ending fans want her to have.

When does Chantelle die in Eastenders?

EastEnders has confirmed that Chantelle will be murdered by husband Gray after months of abuse in lockdown.

As her plan to try and escape backfires, she will blurt out that she wants to leave him.

Chantelle will be murdered in EastEnders this week, on Friday, September 18.

Just how she will be killed has not been revealed by the soap but it will be at the hands of Gray.

One thing we know for sure though is that the Taylor family is going to be left devastated once they hear the news.

Chantelle’s parents Karen Taylor and Mitch learn the devastating news of her tragic death after they return to Walford after a holiday in Southend.

Karen (Lorraine Stanley) has already experienced some heartache as she believed her son Keanu Taylor (Danny Waters) could have been dead.

Thankfully, this wasn’t the case but now he is on the run, hiding from Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) after he had an affair with his wife Sharon (Letitia Dean).

Karen also took care of Keanu and Sharon’s baby for a while but had to give him up when his mum decided she wanted him back for good.

Chantelle’s death will come as a massive shock to Karen as none of the family believes anything is wrong with her marriage.

However after her death, Mitch starts to suspect something is wrong after noticing something off between his son-in-law and Chantelle’s boss Kheerat Panesar – who had tried to help her get away from her abusive husband.

A furious Mitch soon spills to Karen about his theory after speaking to Kheerat, bu will Gray face justice?

Alexander-Smith who plays Gray told The Sun: “It’s certainly going to be a shock for the audience and I think that it is important that it concludes in such a tragic way.

“So we’re encouraging women to speak out before that does happen because sadly it is happening. And it’s happening more and more frequently.

“And the importance of this storyline is to give the women courage to speak out and to know that people are listening and to know that there are services out there to help.”

He added: “As shocking as it is to watch hopefully it will give the survivors out there the courage to reach out and get help.”

For those affected by the storyline, there are many different organisations which can help you.

The National Domestic Abuse Helpline is a freephone 24-hour helpline which provides advice and support to women – contact them on 0808 2000 247.

While the Respect Men’s Advice Line is a confidential helpline for all men experiencing domestic violence by a current or ex-partner. Call them on 0808 8010327.

EastEnders continues every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday on BBC One.
