Harlan Coben is an award-winning author who has published a plethora of best-selling books during his career. Everything changed for him when he signed a multi-million dollar five-year deal with Netflix, giving the streaming service permission to transform his creations for the small screen. Since 2018, subscribers have looked forward to seeing his novels jump off the page and onto their TV sets.

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Stay Close.

Stay Close is the latest of Harlan’s novels to be made into an eight-episode mystery drama.

The limited series follows the lives of Megan (played by Cush Jumbo), Ray (Richard Armitage), Lorraine (Sarah Parish) and Detective Broome (James Nesbitt) whose pasts are all intertwined.

But when a man goes missing, all of their secrets start to unravel as they once again return to each other’s lives.

While Harlan has previously worked with actor Armitage on The Stranger, there was another familiar face on set.

Harlan worked closely with his 25-year-old daughter Charlotte Coben who is a screenwriter.

She previously worked on The Stranger with her dad in the writers’ room and actually wrote episode five of the mini-series.

Charlotte returned again for Stay Close working as a story producer and this time around got to write two episodes of the Netflix drama.

Harlan has opened up to press, including Express.co.uk, about what it’s like to work with his daughter on set.

Harlan said: “She’s [Charlotte] really talented and I know she’s my kid but it was actually Nicola [Schindler, producer] who first brought her on board for The Stranger.

“That was something not that I wanted to do and kind of kept away from her but now on all the shows that I work on, I really rely on her.

“She’s a lot funnier than I am, she gets younger people better than I do and it’s been such a cool experience to actually be in the writers’ room and screaming at each other in a creative way.

“And then I remember she’s my daughter, I forget it during the hype of it.”

“Most of the good lines are hers, for those who saw The Stranger, she came up with the alpaca idea. That was not mine, that was not in the book!

“So anything kind of crazy it’s usually Charlotte’s and I could go on and on about how great she is.”

According to Harlan, Charlotte will be working on a project of her own very soon which is both good and bad news for him.

He added: “She’s been a great team member and she wrote several episodes but I think I’m going to lose her soon as she’s getting her own series made which is both making me proud and worrying me because I’ll lose one of my best collaborators.”

As of yet, there has been no indication of what the next novel of Harlan’s to come out on Netflix will be.

When the five-year deal was first made, there were talks of his 2019 book Run Away being adapted.

Plans were also announced back in May 2020 for Harlan’s novel Six Years but there has been no development on either show so far.

Stay Close is available to watch on Netflix.
