Irish DIY store Woodie's drops one of the year's most heartwarming Christmas ads

We knew that Christmas ads would pull on the heartstrings a little more than usual, but we weren’t expecting a creaky gate to push us over the edge.

Irish DIY store Woodie’s has produced one of the most tearjerking ads of the festive season so far, with its ode to community kindness.

The ad sees an elderly woman named Mrs Higgins throughout the year being greeted by neighbours as she comes in and out of her house.

However, as she leaves her garden, the gate constantly creaks and leaves a scrape across her path.

When we get to winter – marked by heavy snowfall, of course – Mrs Higgins returns home with her dog Kevin, and notices that the hinges on her gate have been replaced.

Across the road is a local teenager, who is packing up his tools – with the ad closing with him saying: ‘Happy Christmas, Mrs Higgins.’

The Woodie’s Twitter account explained: ‘If ever there was a Christmas to look out for one another, this is the one.

‘So, we’re delighted to share our Christmas ad which tells the story of how a simple act of homemaking becomes a beautiful act of kindness from one neighbour to another. #WereAllHomemakers.’

The sweet ad was filmed in the rather aptly named for a Christmas ad Ebenezer Terrace in Dublin, and aims to reflect on the good that has come from 2020.

Suzanne Quinn, the marketing and digital director of Woodie’s DIY, said: ‘We have seen first-hand how the small acts of homemaking have become a part of everyone’s lives, more so now than ever.

‘Mrs Higgins celebrates these acts of kindness happening across Ireland and the immense sense of community.’

The ad has touched the hearts of many viewers, who took to social media to crown it one of the year’s biggest tearjerkers.

It comes after another Irish ad set off the waterworks, with supermarket Super Valu’s festive offering reuniting a grandfather and his grandson to celebrate the holiday.

It may only be mid-November, but the Christmas ads are coming thick and fast, with John Lewis, Aldi and Tesco all dropping theirs over the past week.
