BRIT singer and impressionist Joe Longthorne has died.

The 64-year-old, who rose to fame on his own TV show, Search For a Star in 1981, died at 2am in Blackpool today.

His stardom was almost inevitable as he was born into a showbiz family.

When he was just six years old, he came first in a talent show at his school

He was earmarked for his talents as a singer and impressionist, leading him to appear at the London Palladium.

Joe had made his mark in the music industry in the 90s with sell-out performances at the Royal Albert Hall.

Joe was set to make an appearance at Viva Blackpool's evening entertainment show tomorrow.

His family said in a statement: "It is with the deepest sadness that we have to announce that the nation’s beloved entertainer Joe Longthorne MBE passed away peacefully in the early hours of today at his cherished home in Blackpool.

"Joe died in his bedroom, laying in the arms of his devoted husband of 21 years Jamie, with his rosary beads clutched tight to his chest.

"He leaves behind sister Ann and brother John. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go out to Jamie and all the family at this sad time."

It is not his first battle with cancer.

He was diagnosed with blood cancer in 1987. Two years later, medics discovered he had chronic lymphatic lymphona, around the time of his headline appearance at the Royal Variety Performance in 1989.
