Kate Garraway has revealed there were lots of tears when husband Derek Draper returned home after his mammoth 12-month fight against Covid-19.
The Good Morning Britain star returned to the show on Friday to talk about Derek's move from hospital back to their North London home.
She said: "When we came in the door we pulled up, I could see the faces of Darcey and Billy looking out the window and they ran to the door and immediately burst into tears.
"There was lots of hugging and we got him inside – he absolutely knew he was home."
Kate laughed as she went on: "He is responding all the time but he's not able to say, as you might imagine him saying, 'Why the hell is the place such a mess?
"But he's absolutely responding and aware to where he is, there's just been so many lovely moments.
"I've been saying, 'When you get home, you can have one of my casseroles,' which he loves, by the way, it's not a threat, because he can swallow a bit now."
Kate has made their front room Derek's bedroom for now, meaning they've had to move the furniture into the kitchen to make space for his medical equipment.
Derek spent 12 months in hospital as he continued his fight against the effects of coronavirus – though he recovered from the actual virus months ago.
Kate has been keeping Good Morning Britain followers updated on Derek's battle against the deadly virus but he has now been allowed home, alongside lots of care equipment and professional staff.
"It's not just help with looking after him," she explained, "because it is 24 hour care – I haven't really slept.
"It's a whole new team that are working with him and helping him to come through. It's going to take a lot of adjustment."
And while Kate prepares for the new challenge of making sure Derek is cared for while he's home, she explained their kids gave her a good reminder.
