Love Islands Gemma Owen floors fans and the villa as she reveals her age

Love Island's Gemma Owen left the villa and fans at home floored as she revealed her age during Monday's opening episode.

The daughter of Michael Owen revealed that she has only just turned 19 with the villa shocked over her revelation, joking that they felt old.

While Gemma, who is the youngest contestant, admitted of her age: "Yeah, not many people expect it!"

Viewers were also left stunned, especially after learning that Gemma only just turned 19 in May, as they pointed out that she is so young.

Taking to Twitter, one person said: "Still can’t believe Gemma only turned 19 last month #LoveIsland."

A different account put: "Sorry but Gemma has only been 19 for a month? Shes basically 18? #LoveIsland."

Another follower wrote: "Nah Gemma was born 1st May 2003. She only JUST turned 19!? #LoveIsland."

While a different viewer added: "Wait gemma turned 19 literally last month?????? #LoveIsland."

However, other fans were quick to point out that other contestants have also been 19 on Love Island in the past with the likes of Molly-Mae Hague also the same age when she appeared on the ITV2 series in 2019.

Taking to Twitter, one person said: "Why’s everyone shocked she’s 19, so was molly mae #LoveIsland."

A different account put: "Wait wasn’t Molly mae 19 too? #LoveIsland."

Another follower wrote: "Everyone forgetting molly mae was 19 #LoveIsland."

While a different viewer added: "Everyone’s forgetting that Molly Mae was 19 when she came on #loveisland."

During the opening episode, Gemma was coupled up with Liam after the public was asked to vote for their favourite pairings.

During the first episode of the new series, host Laura Whitmore, 37, revealed a new ITV2 show twist as she explained that for the first time ever the public had been asked to pick the couples.

Speaking to the girls – Paige, Indiyah, Tasha, Amber and Gemma, she said: "Well girls, it’s time to couple up. There is something I haven’t told you yet – things are a little different this year.

"You thought you’d all be stepping forward for the boys you fancy the most. However, this is Love Island and you never know what to expect. For the first time ever, we asked the public to play cupid and pick the boy they thought you should couple up with."

After they were paired up, Gemma admitted: "Yeah he's cute, he's fit, I'm happy."

However, this wasn't the only show twist and later in the episode new boy Davide made his entrance as the first bombshell of the series.

Speaking in the Beach Hut about Davide’s arrival, Gemma said: "I was blown away."

Love Island continues every night at 9pm on ITV2.
