Outlander’s return is imminent and with it comes more speculation as the cast continues to tease season six. Now adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s sixth novel, A Breath of Snow and Ashes, one particularly dark storyline is all but confirmed to happen. Caitriona Balfe, the star behind Claire Fraser, recently gave fans an idea of what to expect.
Does Claire kill Malva Christie in Outlander season six?
For most fans, Outlander is a love story at its core, while it may feature time travel, historical tragedy and shocking twists, it is overall a heartwarming affair.
That might be about to change in season six, as the path looks clear for an adaption of Gabaldon’s most disturbing plotline from A Breath of Snow and Ashes.
During the sixth novel, the Christies come to visit Fraser’s Ridge and eventually decide to stay in the idyllic village.
Claire and Malva (played by Jessica Reynolds), the daughter of Thomas (Mark Lewis Jones) and sister of Allan (Alexander Vlahos), strike up a close friendship.
Malva even starts to work for Claire, helping out in her workshop as an apprentice.
That changes one day when she is discovered murdered, with the town quickly putting the blame on Claire.
Thomas steps up to take the blame for Malva’s death, but it doesn’t add up as there is no motive for the killing.
Eventually, the truth is revealed, with Allan behind Malva’s death.
Shockingly, Malva was pregnant with Allan’s child, with Allan killing her for his own disturbed behaviour.
Whether this will be fully adapted into the show remains to be seen, though with all three characters cast, it looks all but confirmed to be happening.
Caitriona Balfe recently teased as much during an interview with Entertainment Weekly, proudly stating: “Outlander does baddies and villains quite well.”
But she also added that “[The Christies] aren’t your typical villains, which is great and refreshing.”
Finally, she teased: “Claire and Malva build a great relationship and bond.
“It’s very destabilizing for Claire. It’s a really heartbreaking, but a really twisted narrative that they all get embroiled in.”
That twisted narrative is almost certain, with the events laid out in the book, it does not indicate that Claire will be the murderer.
While some fans have taken Balfe’s comments to suggest she could be hinting at Claire murdering Malva, it is very unlikely for that to happen.
As Balfe stated, the death is “very destabilizing”, which suggests just how shocking the sequence of events will be in the sixth season.
For now, these comments are all fans have to go on until season six finally drops.
The sixth season is set for release in early 2022, though there is no specific release date for the next chapter of the show.
It is believed the show will return in February, but that is merely speculation at this point.
Now that the later months of the year are approaching, final confirmation on the premiere is expected soon.
A trailer will also likely drop in a few months as production is already underway on season seven.
Both seasons six and seven have had back-to-back productions, meaning fans will not have to suffer another ‘droughtlander’ again.
Outlander season six will premiere early 2022 on Starz in the USA. A UK release date is yet to be confirmed.
