The TV chef is renowned for putting slabs of butter in his dishes, and because he loves the ingredient so much, he has even released a cookbook dedicated to it. James Martin went on to admit that he often gets judged by how much butter he adds to his recipes.
“It shouldn’t be a controversial topic, but let’s be honest, people can get judgy about how much butter you slather on stuff,” the TV chef began.
“Everyone believes their way of buttering toast is the ‘right’ way.
“If it was my granny, she would butter it so much you could see a wedge of butter on it. I can’t do butter if it’s not visual on hot toast.”
The 49-year-old, who presents his own cooking show Saturday Morning, went on to discuss his health concerns.
The TV chef has a check-up with the doctor every six months because his family has a history of heart disease.
“I’m fine,” James added to the Sunday Post. “It’s everything in moderation.
“I don’t drink, I don’t smoke. So, there you go. If you complain about me putting butter on my bread, then stop bloody smoking or stop drinking.”
James may have his own cooking show, but he also regularly appears in the This Morning Kitchen.
The chef’s new book, which was released in October may be called Butter now, although that wasn’t meant to be its original title.
James admitted that his original idea was “boffed off” for a more woke title.
“Fat – that’s what I wanted to call it – and they said, ‘Mmm, maybe not…’,” James told the Daily Mail.
“But the next one will be called Fat.”
James wanted to write a cookbook on butter because it is such a natural ingredient, and he has spent his entire career using it.
He added: “We shouldn’t take butter for granted.
“It’s such an essential part of our food lives right across the globe that it’s a wonder many more haven’t written books on it before.”
The presenter and his team ended up writing the book in just 21 days during the pandemic.
They even photographed dishes on the floor of his famous Hampshire home.
His latest work, Butter, was already on its second reprint the week before publication, and he recently announced that he is joining the relaunch of SpudULike, the jacket potato chain which had 37 outlets when it collapsed in 2019.
James went on to recall how he lost two stone in five weeks due to the stress of Covid-19.
He admitted he lost weight due to the anxiety of opening and shutting his restaurants throughout the pandemic.
