'Schitt's Creek': Rosebud Motel Was Worth More Than You Think

The entire premise of Schitt’s Creek hinged on the Rose family being largely out of money after a bad break. While the fish out of water tale certainly entertained fans for six seasons, the Rose family wasn’t all that broke, and while Schitt’s Creek might have seemed like it was very far from the big city, the property used for the series is anything but. The Rosebud Motel, or the building that served as the fictional rundown hotel, isn’t all that far away from civilization, and it’s worth more than you might think.

What is ‘Schitt’s Creek’ about?

Schitt’s Creek was a Canadian sitcom that found the Rose family suddenly broke after being defrauded by their business manager. After being evicted from their sprawling mansion, the family, including Johnny, Moira, David, and Alexis Rose, move to Schitt’s Creek, a small town Johnny bought for David as a birthday gift.

With few assets to their name, the family moves into two rooms at the Rosebud Motel, a rundown business within the town’s limits. From there, the Rose family has to figure out how to rebuild while learning to live a much different lifestyle. Created by Dan and Eugene Levy, the sitcom ran for six seasons and amassed a cult following.

The Rosebud Motel from ‘Schitt’s Creek’ is worth over $1 million

The Rose family might have been in dire straights when they found themselves out of their mansion without much money. Still, their holdings were more than most people have. Even the famed Rosebud Motel, a well-worn property in the middle of nowhere, has a relatively high value. The building that served as the backdrop for Schitt’s Creek was actually up for sale fairly recently.

In March 2021, Deadline revealed that the building that served as the Rosebud Motel was being sold for $1.6 million. The real-life business is the Hockley Motel. It sits on more than six acres of land that is about 50 miles from Toronto. In a previous life, the motel served as housing for basketball hopefuls. Later, it was seen in multiple TV and film productions, including The Umbrella Academy. Most recently, it served as housing for people in need of quarantine. Now, it could belong to a new owner who will bring it back to life.

The Rosebud Motel isn’t the only filming location that was recently listed for sale, though

While fans are most familiar with The Rosebud Motel, another Schitt’s Creek filming location was recently on the market. The famed mansion that the Rose family called home before they were evicted was also recently listed for sale. According to Forbes, the expansive Toronto mansion was listed for $15 million CAD in January 2021.

Zillow records reveal that the price was changed to $19 million CAD in February 2021, before the owner removed the listing entirely in April 2021. Currently, the property is off the market. The massive home might look like it’s been sitting in Toronto’s exclusive St. Andrew Windfields neighborhood for centuries, but that’s not the case. According to property records, the opulent, 24,000 square foot mansion was custom built in 2012. The current owner of the property remains a mystery.
