There’s been plenty of hype around Stranger Things Season 4 as fans are eager to find out what the heck happened to Jim Hopper. Most of us were under the impression that he died in the blast at the end of season 3, only to learn that he somehow survived. It was a pretty big reveal, but there are apparently more secrets ahead.
In an interview, David Harbour (Jim Hopper) said season 4 will particularly reveal a “secret” about Hopper that he’s been hiding for years.
‘Stranger Things’ Season 4 will see something ‘long buried’ surface
At the end of Stranger Things Season 3, we learned that operatives at a Russian jail were holding an unnamed “American” hostage. After much speculation, a teaser trailer for season 4 revealed that it’s Hopper.
“Although it’s not all good news for our ‘American’; he is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where he will face dangers both human… and other,” show creators Matt and Ross Duffer said in a statement shared with Entertainment Weekly.
“Meanwhile, back in the states, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long buried, something that connects everything…,” the statement continued. “Season 4 is shaping up to be the biggest and most frightening season yet, and we cannot wait for everyone to see more. In the meantime — pray for the American.”
David Harbour teases the reveal of a secret about Hopper
Speaking to Entertainment Tonight about some of the things he’s working on, Harbour mentioned the upcoming season of Stranger Things. He teased that viewers will, for one, get to see and learn more about his character, including one “big” secret.
“There’s some fun stuff that we’re doing this season, but it’s also the heaviest dramatic stuff I’ve ever had to do,” Harbour told Entertainment Tonight. “We get to see a lot of Hopper at his most vulnerable, we’re gonna reveal a lot of backstory points that we’ve only hinted at in boxes in his attic. We’re gonna see a lot of these different threads, and also, we get to see a rebirth of him.”
“And there’s one thing in it that plays very big in this season that I’ve known since the first frame of the first season,” Harbour continued. “Me and the Duffers would sit around and speculate, ‘Oh, wouldn’t this be cool?’ the minute we started shooting. We never thought we’d even get a second season, and then we get to do it in this season.”
“And it’s so satisfying to have had an idea five years prior, and to go like, ‘Oh, this is a season when we’re gonna let out this secret that we were using just as a subtle thing to inform something.’ We’re gonna lay it out finally, and it’s really cool,” he added. But Harbour wouldn’t say much more than that.
