The Last Kingdom season five is on the way for Netflix and in the last season, viewers were introduced to the Viking warlord, Sigtryggr (played by Eysteinn Sigurðarson). Sigtryggr had attempted to take over Winchester, but Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) was able to encourage him to discuss a peace plan with King Edward (Timothy Innes). Fans believe Sigtryggr may be destined for an even bigger role in the upcoming season.

Will Sigtryggr take on a major role in Uhtred plot?

The Last Kingdom season four was one of the most action-packed yet as it saw plenty of unexpected battles and introduced some brand new characters.

Sigtryggr was introduced in the latest season when he rescued Uhtred’s friend-turned-enemy Brida (Emily Cox) from slavery.

Brida persuaded Sigtryggr and his men to carry out a siege at Winchester, in order to weaken the king and his trust in Uhtred.

But the fighting stopped as Sigtryggr had started to develop feelings for Uhtred’s daughter – Stiorra (Ruby Hartley).

An arrangement was made, in which Sigtryggr said he would leave Winchester, providing he could take Stiorra with him. Uhtred was reluctant, but he agreed, and it set up a potential alliance between Uhtred and the Viking warlord.

Uhtred managed to talk Brida down after she tried to kill him, and she was last seen heading off on her own to give birth to her child.

So it seems Brida and Sigtryggr may not come across each other again, and their alliance has fizzled out, with Sigtryggr taking Uhtred’s side.

Fans instantly fell in love with Sigtryggr’s character, as he is definitely not a typical Dane. He is open to discussion and negotiation, and would very rarely put people’s lives at risk unnecessarily.

Viewers took to Reddit to discuss his role, with one saying: “Hopefully Sygtrygger takes a bigger role. I like him a lot, and could see him becoming a good ally to Uhtred.”

Another fan said: “If they follow the books then Sigtryggr will have a pretty big part, it should get very interesting.”

The series is based on The Saxon Stories by Bernard Cornwell, and it has brought Cornwell’s characters to life on the small screen.

Fans called his character a “welcome breath of fresh air” from the Danish side, and they have called him a rational leader.

Another viewer said: “I was really disliking the Danes this season until he popped up! Very interesting character.

“Thankfully he didn’t go along with Brida’s “kill them all” ideology. She went from being a fan favourite to probably the most hated character this season.”

Fans have pointed out how Sigtryggr’s storyline in the books is very different to that in the series, as in the original stories he never saved Brida from the Welsh king.

In the books, he also attacks a different kingdom to Winchester, and he does not come across Edward in battle, so fans are interested to see where the series will take his character.

In the books, Sigtryggr loses an eye during a fight with Uhtred, but it seems in the series they are destined to become good friends.

Speaking of his role in the upcoming season, another fan said on Reddit: “Sigtryggr is by far one of their most compelling danes yet. I think he will be a force of immense power in season 5. [sic].”

Viewers have suggested Sigtryggr’s character reflects a change in the times following the death of King Alfred (David Dawson) and he is a vision of how Danes have changed since Uhtred’s character has aged.

He has been described as a “next-generation villain” for the Saxons, but now that he and Stiorra are bound together, he will most likely be seen as more of a friend.

The Last Kingdom cast described his character as being “cool, calm and collected”, and nothing like viewers have seen before.

Sigtryggr’s character appears in a total of four novels, so fans can definitely expect to see a lot more of him in the upcoming season.

If the series stays true to the books for season five, Sigtryggr and Stiorra’s relationship will get put to the ultimate test.

There is no knowing whether he will create a stronger bond with Uhtred, but the pair are likely to cross paths again.

Actor Sigurðarson is on Instagram and he shared a photo of himself in costume as Sigtryggr – one fan said: “Love that face! It has so many stories to tell! Hope they bring you all back soon! We miss you all!”
