Victoria Derbyshire had to ask for permission from BBC bosses to appear on I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! 2020.
The daytime host explained the Beeb's rivalry with ITV meant she couldn't sign on the dotted line until approval from her employers was granted.
Victoria, 52, said: "I had to check with the bosses, obviously."
She added: "I have taken unpaid leave."
While her exact I'm A Celeb fee is unknown it's likely to be in the tens of thousands of pounds for the maximum three week stint.
Despite being given the green light to enter the Welsh castle, Victoria insists she won't drop her BBC image and start raging about politics or recalling awkward TV moments.
She said: "I’m allowed to have an opinion saying ‘Oh my god I am starving’ but I am a BBC journalist and I am not gonna reveal my opinions on all sorts of politics or other matters.
"I am quite sensible and quite responsible in that respect."
Victoria says that since becoming a breast cancer survivor in 2015 she is more open than ever before to take on new challenges.
She was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2015 before opting for a single mastectomy – which was successful – two months later.
Victoria said: "I am completely excited as I have had two weeks' quarantining on my own and that was quite quiet at first reading books and watching telly but now I am getting a bit restless and I want to meet some people. I am dying to meet some people.
"When ITV asked me to do it and I talked to my kids about it, they were beyond excited about the possibility of me doing it and it’s the only TV show they watch every year – the rest of the time they are on YouTube.
"We all watch it as a family. My husband loves it. We love it. My two boys just really really wanted me to do it. It’s a once in a lifetime experience. And I said – Yes."
Victoria will be joined on the show by Team GB Olympic legend Mo Farah, Corrie's Beverley Callard, Radio 1 DJ Jordan North, EastEnders actress Jessica Plummer, Strictly's AJ Pritchard, presenter Vernon Kay, author Giovanna Fletcher, West End star Ruthie Henshall and EastEnders Shane Richie.
