The Yellowstone ranch has plenty of skeletons in its cupboard that have yet to be uncovered. With John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) on the brink of death and his land more vulnerable than ever, a new threat could be about to blow its secrets wide open when the thrilling Paramount drama returns.

Newcomer Piper Perabo could be playing yet another rival for John Dutton and his ranch in the next season of Yellowstone.

Perabo was confirmed to be joining the cast alongside Jacki Weaver when Paramount announced season four would arrive sometime in the autumn.

Meanwhile, the biological father of Jamie Dutton (Wes Bentley) will also be returning, as guest star Will Patton will reprise his role of Garrett Randall as series regular.

Already facing threats on all sides, it’s speculated Perabo’s character Summer Higgins could cause a lot of trouble for John and the bunkhouse next season.

The actress is described as playing a “protester from Portland who is against the state-funded police force that protects industrialized farming and the killing of animals.”

As the Duttons use their considerable political influence to protect their landholdings, Perabo’s presence could upend the various structures that give them the authority to use the ranch how they please.

If the protests gain traction, the Yellowstone will be under much more scrutiny than it’s used to and could be in danger of releasing some of its darkest secrets.

For example, ranch manager Rip Wheeler (Cole Hauser) is tasked with taking undesirables and trespassers to the ‘train station’, where they are swiftly killed and disposed of.

Summer could force the police to reconsider their stance on protecting the ranch, rendering the Yellowstone vulnerable to more investigations into its more untoward practices.

Media blog Cartermatt speculated as much in their latest run-down on Yellowstone’s upcoming season.

They wrote: “While she’s not a Big Bad by any means, we do wonder if she could put undue attention on the ranch.

“Or at least be exploited by Market Equities so that they can generate headlines around her cause.”

The unwanted attention could coincide disastrously with the attacks on John, Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Kayce (Luke Grimes) at the end of season three.

As John and Beth will most likely be spending much of season four in hospital, Summer is better positioned to march her protests right up to the Dutton Ranch’s doorstep.

Plus, the protests could give Roarke Morris (Josh Holloway) and Market Equities the perfect opportunity to swoop in and take the ranch for themselves.

Fellow newcomer Jacki Weaver has been confirmed as Market Equities CEO Caroline Warner, so they will no doubt have a number of schemes up their sleeves heading into the next season of Yellowstone.

Piper Perabo will join the series fresh from her key roles in series Penny Dreadful: City of Angels and Turn Up Charlie.

She will also lead the upcoming musical-comedy drama The Big Leap, so is sure to hold her own against the formidable existing cast.

Paramount have yet to confirm the specific release date for the new season, but new episodes are hoped to arrive shortly after the summer.

Yellowstone season 4 will premiere in autumn 2021 on Paramount.
